Arlington Cemetery

Had the folks down the other weekend (always love when they visit - I can do all the really touristy things...not that I don't do them anyway ;)
Anyway, went to the American History Museum (we had the first snowfall of the season...and it was October 29!), but the next day was beautiful and surprisingly warm so we went to the Pentagon Memorial and Arlington Cemetery.
Took all the following with my iPhone.

Pumpkin Patch

Went to a pumpkin patch/corn maze this weekend with the bf, his sister and nephew. Became a little obsessed shooting the kids (they are just so darn cute)

And to shake things up - here's a landscape.

National Arboretum

After a failed attempt to go to the Arboretum the day after Hurricane Irene, we made it this past weekend. Frankly trees didn't do much for me (although with so few people around it was very peaceful and serene), but I was a little obsessed with the Capitol Columns (in case you couldn't tell). These columns are the originally ones from the Capitol Building - they were removed when the building was expanded and replaced with marble reproductions and these original columns (made of sandstone or limestone or something) were moved here. With no one around and in this setting you can almost imagine yourself in Ancient Rome.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens Pt. II (Summer)

Went back to the Aquatic Gardens - this time when there was actually some greenery.

My new IPHONE!

Okay, I downloaded the most awesome app on my brand new iphone that takes pictures with this cool vintage, faded quality that I'm pretty damn obsessed with!
These are the first 2 pictures that I took with it - these are just sitting on the couch in my room playing with the app for the first time, but I love the way they look.

Cutest dog ever!

I recently found these photos I took last christmas of a dog Cate brought home to look after for the holiday. Either dogs are incredibly photogenic or this dog is just so adorable that I think all these pictures are good :) The cropping in the first one is a little weird (I know) and the lighting in the house was really bad so the coloring was off and I converted all of these to B&W and sepia.

My Safari

My mom recently went to the Mara in Kenya on safari. I then went on my own safari...to the DC Zoo! After checking out some animals (the lions were really the only things that were providing me with anything to shoot) I turned my camera on bigger prey...Ro and Gavin :)

Mufasa!

Still checking out lemurs

Holocaust Museum

This is a poem that was in this month's Volunteer Voice, which is the Holocaust Museum's newsletter for its volunteers. I liked it so much that I wanted to share it.

Why We Serve – Or Why We Shouldn’t  by Ed Weiner
“How can you possibly volunteer at the Holocaust Museum – it’s so depressing.”
“Is it safe? I mean really safe. I’ve heard stories…”
“Enough already, at your age it’s time for you to slow down.”
“You need to spend more time with your grandchildren.”
“I just read the metro system has broken down again.”
“And with all that flu going around, you don’t need to be there.”
“So just give me one good reason why you must still volunteer.”
“No, I can’t give you one good reason, but I can give you six million!” [Deafening silence] “I rest my case.”

And while I'm at it (and in an attempt to preserve the integrity of the PHOTO blog), below is one of my favorite quotes that is written on a wall in the museum.

I feel like such a tourist...

In my attempt to find Daniel Chester Drive, I was making loops around the Lincoln Memorial with quite a crowd of tourists since it was so nice out and Cherry Blossom Festival is coming up. Anyway, I realized I have no pictures of Lincoln Memorial, so here is my tourist-y photo of probably one of the most photographed places in DC. :)

Daniel French Drive, SW

Although not acknowledged anywhere in the area, this is the street named after Daniel Chester French. (For the record, this was supposed to be an awesome picture of the street sign with his name and the Lincoln Memorial in the background - very disappointed that this wasn't possible ).

My 24th Birthday!

Instead of a re-tweet, I am doing a re-blog (yes, I just made that word up).

My wonderful roommates made me a delicious feast for my birthday last week and then during the cake portion of the evening, a certain Samantha Peterson went a little camera happy. For some of the reasons why I do not like my own picture taken (I am aware of the irony), click here.  :)

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens - Original Color

Based on a comment from my last post, I must admit that I did feel torn about converting the photos to B&W, but I had been so determined to include some B&W that I did it anyway, despite liking the color versions myself. Therefore, below are the original color photos from my last post.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (cont)

Since I've missed doing black and white photography I converted some of the Kenilworth photos to B&W.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens - January 15, 2011

I hope no one was too disappointed by my long absence :) Fortunately I am back with a lot of new photos. I went to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens today (I was the only soul around - it gave me the rare opportunity to commune with nature a little bit :)) Anyway, I have so many that I want to share that I am going to reveal them slowly over a few days (just to whet your appetites)
